Auto sales stall

Although total car sales growth this year has been lacklustre, small city demand is relatively strong.

Total car sales rose 6.4% YoY in the first nine months, slightly shy of our forecast growth rate of 8% (CC Jun 16 2011, Big Call), to total 10.5m units. Sales growth in September was higher, climbing 8.8% YoY to 1.32m. But while the overall picture lacks excitement – at least by the sizzling standards of 2010, when car sales zoomed 33.29% YoY – several important trends are clear.
