A boom in consumer credit

Our survey of respondents in 236 cities in 30 provinces shows an alacrity for consumer credit is surging, and combines with other factors to drive a positive outlook for consumer spending for the next six months.

With inflation riding at 28-month highs in November, consumers might be expected to rein in their enthusiasm. However, the findings of our survey of 1,778 people in 236 cities in 30 provinces conducted between Dec 10 and Dec 30 suggest a buoyant outlook for consumer activity. The growing acceptance of consumer credit as a purchasing medium, optimism over salary increases and a tendency to dig into savings rather than scale back spending to offset price rises are underpinning bright prospects for many retail and service sectors.
