Milk quality standards criticised
- Published 30 Jun 2011
Commentators debate why regulators have downgraded quality standards within China's dairy industry.
The quality of unprocessed milk has become a topic of keen debate, following a downward revision of quality standards in late 2010. The revision allowed unprocessed milk to contain as much as 2m germs per litre and as little as 2.8 grams of protein, compared to500,000 germs per litre and 2.95 grams per litre previously. Why, with food safety being such a hot-button issue in China, are the authorities content to promote falling standards?
