Lower input costs, increasing competition and industry consolidation are the key themes for 2012.

2011 was anything but sweet for China's soft drink makers. Food safety scandals, unfavourable summer weather and soaring raw-material costs left a sour taste in the mouth. But now – though it may be too early to call a turnaround – at least some aspects of the adverse business environment are starting to improve. For one thing, key input prices are coming down.
