The mysterious cabbage crisis
- Published 05 May 2011
The disparity between cabbage prices at the farm gate and retail prices has sparked nationwide debate.
From April 11-17, the average wholesale price of vegetables in China declined by 9.8% compared with the previous week, resulting in a 16.2% drop over a three week period. In Jinan, capital city of Shandong province, the wholesale price of cabbage recently dropped to a tenth of its price at the end of 2010, causing real hardship for farmers – yet retail cabbage prices are still high and rising. The price disparity has triggered nationwide debate.
