A Manichean polarity

Some in the West see China as a hubristic future superpower on a collision course with the US. In much of south-east Asia, however, the positive commercial influence of a rising China is dominant.
There are always several different sides to the story of China’s transformation. For this reason, it helps to keep a balance – to recognise the positive and the negative while minimising neither.
