Protectionism paranoia?

Recent moves by the European Union and the US to launch trade tariffs, and anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations on Chinese steel pipe imports has sparked fears over the onset of protectionism.
On September 30, the European Union imposed anti-dumping tariffs of between 17.7% and 39.2% on some Chinese steel pipes, arguing that their imports could pose a threat to local business. Several days later, the US followed suit by launching anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations into Chinese made steel pipes, which could lead to duties of more than 100%. This was in addition to earlier import duties on Chinese tyres of up to 35%.
