Should a Chinese company buy GM’s Hummer?
- Published 11 Jun 2009
Tengzhong still needs to persuade at least two Chinese government agencies that it can turn Hummer "greener" and more profitable to get approval.
Little-known Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co is in talks to acquire the gas-guzzling Hummer from General Motors, the US automaker that recently filed for bankruptcy. The official Xinhua news agency has said Beijing should be "strict" in its approval of the deal, which violates environmental policies. Tengzhong, however, says it will keep Hummer production in the US and give it a "greener" engine. Analysts have suggested that Hummer might cost around $100m (Rmb 683.3m, €70.8m, £60.9m).
