Getting to grips with the size of China's for-profit education sector.
Getting a sense of the size and trajectory of China’s education market is not straightforward. The National Bureau of Statistics bundles spending on education together with that on recreation, and does not break out figures for the relatively new for-profit education sector – as distinct from the state-subsidised education system. This leaves us reliant on consultancy estimates, such as those from BDA China, a Beijing-based consultancy specialising in telecoms, internet, media, IT and education, set out below.
