Chinese labour demand strengthens in August

Labour demand strengthened on both a MoM and YoY basis in August, driven by a sharp rise in manufacturing demand. Overtime and blue-collar wage growth accelerated, according to our latest survey of 285 construction, manufacturing and service-sector companies, while companies were able to fill a larger proportion of vacancies.

Labour demand stays strong despite sequential moderation

Labour demand moderated slightly on a MoM basis, but strengthened YoY in July, primarily due to strong demand from construction firms. Our latest survey of 285 companies nationwide also showed an acceleration in blue-collar wage growth, while employers were able to fill a larger proportion of job vacancies.

Labour demand moderated in June

Labour demand moderated on both a MoM and a YoY basis in June, according to our latest survey of 285 construction, manufacturing and service-sector companies. This was largely due to a significant easing in manufacturing-sector demand, which offset a recovery in construction-sector labour demand and overtime. Blue-collar wage growth remained muted for a second successive month.

Labour demand remained robust in May

Labour demand continued to grow on a YoY basis in May despite a slight sequential slowdown, according to our latest survey of 285 companies across the construction, manufacturing and service sectors in 15 cities nationwide. Blue-collar wages appear to be stabilising following strong recent growth, suggesting an easing in the labour shortage seen in recent months.

Service sector drives labour demand surge in April

A surge in service-sector demand drove China Confidential’s MoM and YoY Labour Demand Indices up sharply in April, according to our latest survey of 285 companies across the construction, manufacturing and service sectors in 15 cities nationwide. Overtime activity rose sharply, while average blue-collar wages also rose to an all-time high, indicating a shortage of labour in coastal regions in particular.

Respondents reported an increase in overtime, but a moderation in blue-collar wage growth.
